Die Zufriedenheit mit genitalangleichenden Operationen ist nach einer Studie (Hess et al. 2014), veröffentlicht im Ärzteblatt sehr hoch (98,2 %).

Opponents of a self-determination law often point out that there are very many transgender people who reverse a transition. First of all: Yes, there are these so-called "detransitions". Opponents of the SBG often use the term "Regretter", which suggests that people regret their transition.

A legal "detransition" (actually it is an administrative act, namely the reversal of the change of first name and civil status) works in Germany exactly like the change of first name and civil status - the transsexual law applies. In other words: application to the district court, hearing, assessment, decision of the AG and the first name and marital status is changed again. A medical "detransition" is extremely rare and contrary to the claims of various SBG opponents, it is usually not due to dissatisfaction with the medical result, but mainly due to social exclusion and disadvantage. A study (Turban et al. 2021) shows that 82.5% of the decisions to detransition are due to EXTERNAL factors: pressure from partners/family/friends, bullying, a hostile school or work environment and increased threats of violence and experience of violence, including sexual assault. According to a study (Hess et al. 2014) published in the Ärzteblatt, satisfaction with genital adjustment operations is very high (98.2%). The study was conducted by the Fenway Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School) (n=27715) and, with the large amount of data collected, is considered one of the first thorough studies of the factors that drive trans people to detransition. About the study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8213007/ What this (and other studies on detransition) fails to take into account is that... 1. it cannot be determined how many later decide to make a transition (i.e. only postpone or postpone it, for example) 2. transgender people in most countries only have a binary gender system available and legal transitions are only possible from "man to woman" or "woman to man" and medical measures have so far been aimed at a complete "gender change". A transition (with medical support) outside of the binary gender model is usually not possible. In my estimation, the number of so-called detransitions would be significantly lower if transgender people were also given opportunities to transition outside of the rigid binary gender model.
